—DIY the future!— 胸元にワンポイントであしらった「DIY the future!」 —Naturally Dyed Organic Cotton T-shirt— Made From: 100% Organic Cotton We’re confident you’ll adore the soft texture, and the rich natural colours of this 100% organic cotton t-shirt. Hand-dyed using all-natural dyes, with a design printed using traditional silkscreen printing methods. The illustration was drawn by one of our talented members of staff, before being transformed into the original design you can see here. —DIY the future!— The phrase “DIY the future!”—Folklore’s longstanding motto—printed across the chest of this t-shirt expresses the desire to take the future into our own hands, and build something wonderful. With this one simple phrase, this modest t-shirt communicates a profound, yet wholly achievable dream: Nowadays we find ourselves a tiny part of a single, gigantic economic system that stretches across the entire globe. One where the actions of rich, powerful countries have a huge impact both on the markets, and the environment we depend on—and in doing so are able to play with the lives of ordinary people around the world. However, even placed in this difficult position, it’s possible to do things our own way—to work hard to produce things that improve and enrich our lives. And—though the global impact may well be modest—help grow the economies of our local communities, all at our own pace, while taking time to appreciate life. —Mustard— This bright, enlivening yellow—that, like the sun itself, never fails to lift the spirits—is (believe it or not) actually made from onions! Taking the discarded skins of the onions used in Hostel Yui-an’s vegetable curry, we simmer them in water to extract the dye. Alum—often used in pickling Japanese vegetables—is also introduced to the mix to help stop the dye from running after application. This process not only produces a beautiful dye, but also helps us reduce our kitchen waste. What’s more, after the dye has been extracted the leftovers are composted, for future use in Yui-an’s farm. —Russet— This rich brown dye is made using sun-dried coffee grounds. Used in dyeing Hostel Yui-an’s bedding, this dye is perfect for bringing a touch of nature to one’s daily life. As time passes the dye will gradually soften into a slightly more greyish brown, so one can appreciate both the richness of the original colour, and the natural changes that follow. We’re grateful that, even after brewing, these delicious coffee beans can perform one final task for us!
