—Keikogi-Made Work Apron (Mustard/Medium)— Made From: 100% Cotton A tough, durable work apron made from carefully re-tailored keikogi—traditional Japanese martial arts uniforms—perfect for carrying around tools with you as you work. Originally designed for heavy use by Folklore’s DIY team, it has been redesigned and improved countless times in the pursuit of both function and style. It comes with large pockets—for carrying around larger tools such as hammers and tool bits—and a flap pocket on the chest to keep your smartphone safe. Additionally, its straps loop over the shoulders—not the neck—to avoid neck strain when carrying around heavy tools. The beautiful Japanese sashiko quilting of the original keikogi has been carefully tailored to make this not just a utilitarian piece of workwear, but something to be appreciated for its own sake. —Mustard— This bright, enlivening yellow—that, like the sun itself, never fails to lift the spirits—is (believe it or not) actually made from onions! Taking the discarded skins of the onions used in Hostel Yui-an’s vegetable curry, we simmer them in water to extract the dye. Alum—often used in pickling Japanese vegetables—is also introduced to the mix to help stop the dye from running after application. This process not only produces a beautiful dye, but also helps us reduce our kitchen waste. What’s more, after the dye has been extracted the leftovers are composted, for future use in Yui-an’s farm.
